Wireless and Wi-Fi connections allow computer access to the internet via a two-way radio signal. These types of connections permit a varying number of users to connect to an access point which then has direct access via the router to the internet. Wi-Fi connections are capable of transmitting larger amounts of data than microwaves; however the distance of data transmission is significantly less and can also be affected by walls and doors etc.
These connections are one of the most common for homes and business users, as they are by far the most affordable way of distributing internet easily and rapidly. Being relatively inexpensive, easy to set up and wire-free, they provide the ideal way to connect a number of users to the internet. It is also possible to create an ad-hoc connection which allows computers to directly communicate with each other without using an access point.
Using WPA, WPA2 and WEP encryptions any information can be sent and received securely and prevent unauthorised access to your computer, or network.
